Odd Linux Mint 18.1 Error

Odd Linux Mint 18.1 Error

I have two users on a Linux Mint 18.1 box.  Dropbox working well for one user.  And the other was working well too, for a while.  But all at once, for one user Dropbox will not start:

cleo@coalriver ~ $ dropbox status
Dropbox isn't running!
cleo@coalriver ~ $ dropbox start
Starting Dropbox...Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/dropbox", line 1535, in <module>
ret = main(sys.argv)
File "/usr/bin/dropbox", line 1524, in main
result = commands[argv[i]](argv[i+1:])
File "/usr/bin/dropbox", line 1395, in start
if not start_dropbox():
File "/usr/bin/dropbox", line 732, in start_dropbox
stderr=sys.stderr, stdout=f, close_fds=True)
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/subprocess.py", line 711, in __init__
errread, errwrite)
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/subprocess.py", line 1343, in _execute_child
raise child_exception
OSError: [Errno 8] Exec format error
cleo@coalriver ~ $

But when I login as the other user, its fine.

dsims@coalriver:~$ dropbox status
Up to date
dsims@coalriver:~$

Any ideas?

I solved it.

For this user I removed both .dropbox and .dropbox-dist, and restarted dropbox. (I believe that removing only .dropbox-dist would have done it though) We had to re-login and set up credentials, but all seems well now.

Thanks for your reply, but probably the majority of affected users are unlikely to know how to do what you did: "I removed both .dropbox and .dropbox-dist".

This difficulty was first reported a few years ago and Dropbox should have been solved it by now. It prevents me from using linux because I need to be able to have control over the Dropbox directories that are synchronised with computers that don't have the capacity to store all the files that are on Dropbox (up to 1Gb).

This is now urgent because the weekly forced  update/reboot policy of Windows, with the associated irreversible resetting of defaults, renders that OS unusable for many people including me. I don't mind using the linux  terminal, but propose that when that's necessary a step by step procedure be provided.

$rm -rf ~/.dropbox-dist

$rm -rf ~/.dropbox

$dropbox install -i

Yes, removing just .dropbox-dist/ fixed it for me  on Kubuntu 18.04 (and there was no need to reconnect Dropbox to the computer afterwards as all the config in .dropbox/ was saved).
