Have you moved or renamed your home folder recently? Renamed your user account? If so, you'll want to follow the instructions listed in this post.

An advanced reinstall, by following the steps in Stefanie's reply on the thread linked above, is still the best method to fix most issues with the Dropbox client. I beleive there's also a Permissions Fix button in Dropbox Preferences on a Mac, though I'm not certain of that as I'm a Windows user.

Thank you! I followed the solution you referenced and it appears to be working - right now synching tens of thousands of files..
