Reinstall Dropbox desktop app without relinking account

Reinstall Dropbox desktop app without relinking account

Michael S.163

I'm planning on doing a reformat and fresh install of the OS on my machine.  However, Dropbox has unceremoniously changed the maximum number of linked devices to 3.  I have a lot more than this and can't remove any of them, so I need to retain the existing link to the same device which will persist across the reinstall.

Is it sufficient to back up my entire Dropbox folder (edit: I should clarify that I mean ~/.dropbox/) and then restore it before reinstalling the Dropbox client, or is there something else I need to do?  (Assume I might need to do this on any OS supported by Dropbox.)

Hey there @Michael S.163,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here but if you are to re-install the OS on your device, then the desktop app connection to your Dropbox account will be broken. The newly installed OS will essentially be seen as a new device.

While you will be able to easily keep/restore your Dropbox folder, the desktop app connection won’t be possible to maintain.

Hope this helps clarify the matter, I’m always here if you have more questions about this - Cheers!
