Selective sync/My Dropbox confusion

Selective sync/My Dropbox confusion

Jocelyn G.1

I have turned off almost every folder in Selective Sync yet the "My Dropbox" folder on my laptop has loads of files taking up loads of HD space. What am I not understanding? My goal is to have those files only in the cloud.

Thanks.

If the folder is NOT inside 'Dropbox' then no, it wont delete at www.dropbox.com.

But, you can check that by simply moving a file out of the directory and seeing what happens.

Is your 'My Documents' folder inside of Dropbox?

The only files/folders that are syncing to the cloud and so able to be Selectively Sync'd off the machine are those within the 'Dropbox' folder.

So, if all you did was copy 'My Documents' to Dropbox at some point then Dropbox wont have had any updates from the original My Documents folder since you did it and when you've Selectively Sync'd it that will have removed the copied folder (with the old data only) off the computer, not any anywhere else.

Also. Note that if you remove directories using Selective Sync you cannot then locally save to them. You will need to save to the computer and then upload manually via the website to those locations. They do not stay saveable on your computer.

Thank you for the quick response.

I'm a little confused by your answer, but maybe this is my issue: I have a My Dropbox folder under Documents and also a Dropbox folder that is just under my username. When I look under my username, I also have a folder called Dropbox (old).

Sounds like you have a few old unused ones.

To work out which one is the 'active' folder click on the Dropbox icon on your status bar and then the folder icon (top left). That will open up the one that Dropbox is using/looking at/syncing.

You may want to delete any others!

Okay. So I figured out which folder Dropbox was syncing. What's odd is that one of the folders that I chose to "selective sync" off is showing up there. Not such a big deal. OTOH, I do want to clarify one thing: if I delete everything in the My Dropbox folder (which I see at Dropbox.com) the files that are on Dropbox.com will not be deleted?
