Storing Files not on my computer on dropbox

Explorer | Level 4

I was told by a Dropbox user that you can now back up files from a hard drive which are not on your computer - ie they dont take up space on your computer.

I have dropbox account paid for up to 2 Terrabytes for the next year and only use a fraction of it because my computer harddrive is relatively small and I dont want to bring files from a hard drive onto my computer so that they can be on drop box.

So if someone can explain if it is possible and if so how  to hook up a hard drive and back files up to dropbox but they remain off my computer...

thanks in advance

Hey there @musicspirit,

I'm not sure exactly the method that the user suggested to you, but it sounds like they might be referring to using smart sync. Smart sync will reduce the space the files take on your hard drive to a negligible amount.

There isn't currently a function within the desktop app that would allow you to have files outside of the Dropbox folder syncing with your account online. Unless, perhaps, they are  using a third-party app to achieve this.

Since you have the files you want to sync on an external drive, you would need to move files to the Dropbox folder in your internal drive (where I'm assuming the Dropbox folder is located). Then, after the files have been synced with your Dropbox account online, you can then apply smart sync to reduce the space they take on the hard drive itself.

I hope this helps - Thanks!
