Riccardo, Rob, Mark.., if the other DBUS workaround didn't work in your case, you can try this new excellent workaround, also with no need to use root, adapted from File C.:

dropbox stop && dbus-launch dropbox start

Thanks Juan, that works!

The only thing is that in the terminal I continuously get the following:

Service 'org.kde.kwin' does not exist.

Anyway, it works.

Edit: it looks like those lines only spawn if I I right-click on the icon and then click on the options. Anyway, it's not important at all.

Riccardo, maybe that error has relation with your previous use of the old deprecated sudo workaround, with some files and folders getting owned by root (especially the .dbus hidden folder). The fix for this is applying just one time the following, as explained at Ask Ubuntu:

sudo dropbox stop
sudo chown -R USER:GROUP /home/USER/Dropbox
sudo chown -R USER:GROUP /home/USER/.dropbox
sudo chown -R USER:GROUP /home/USER/.dbus
dropbox start

Of course, replacing USER and GROUP. For example, on KDE you can see the good ones with Dolphin or another file manager. In your case, it can be something similar to:

sudo dropbox stop
sudo chown -R riccardo:riccardo /home/riccardo/Dropbox
sudo chown -R riccardo:riccardo /home/riccardo/.dropbox
sudo chown -R riccardo:riccardo /home/riccardo/.dbus
dropbox start

And then recover again the tray icon for normal user with:

dropbox stop && dbus-launch dropbox start

I had missed the

sudo chown -R riccardo:riccardo /home/riccardo/.dbus

but it doesn't solve the "issue".

Thank you anyway. Everything seems to be working.

dropbox stop && dbus-launch dropbox start

this one also works in plasma 5

another very easy workaround (in plasma 5 only) is to simply log out to (sdm) then log back in and dropbox tray icon will load.

excellent Juan, thank you! Then dbus-launch workaround works perfectly.

This Majaro Foum link

https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=31095.msg261234#msg261234

gives the solution that worked for me.

In a nutshell, on KDE, execute this script on startup:

#!/bin/bash
dropbox stop
dbus-launch dropbox start

After getting Juan's solution to work I ran into a new problem. After waiting almost three minutes for my dropbox Website to start up I started Chrome (my default browser) and that showed me a failed attempt to open my Dropbox. A little investigation showed that 'opening a dropbox item from a symlink (in Linux) breaks the dropbox icon. I have a couple of files that I open that way from shortcuts on my desktop.

Just now I ran the script again and my dropbox shut down, restarted, and took about 55 seconds to open up.  So no more opening files from symlinks/shortcuts. I'm curious if 55 seconds to call up my browser and open my Dropbox is a normal delay.

This has fixed it for me. I use PCLinuxOS-KDE, and Tex came up with this solution.

Edit: in a text editor, as root or SU-  /usr/lib/dropbox-dist/dropboxd

Add the line below and comment out the line it is replacing

exec dbus-launch "$PAR/dropbox-lnx.x86_64-3.14.7/dropboxd" "$@"

reboot computer and the icon on the taskbar should appear in KDE.

Hi,

I solved this problem by removing the .dropbox-dist directory in my home folder, then copying the good old 3.12.6 version which works fine and finally changing recursively the ownership of that directory to root:root to prevent the dropbox daemon to update to a newer non-working version.
