I know there is already a thread covering this error - it is marked solved, so I can't comment - none of the solutions on that thread work for me.
Using Windows 8.1 - problem has appeared in the last few weeks.
every 10 minutes a very distracting User Account Control message box starts flashing. The only way to get rid of it is to click through the UAC black screen every 10 minutes.
I have tried uninstalling Dropbox.
It then becomes inpossible to reinstall Dropbox due to an error.
Then the only way I can reinstall is in safe mode.
When I reinstall the problem persists.
The only way I can stop the distraction is by turning dropbox off,
which is not a solution.
I have tried turning my firewall off - no change.
I have tried disabling / enabling the dropbox update service
I don't want to turn UAC off.
Are there any new solutions to this problem?
thanks in advance for any help
This sounds familiar-
I will need to go through the reinstall process to note down the exact error code.
My attempts to fix the problem have included:
1: resinstall - I think I got that error - will have to try again to confirm exact code
2: remove dropbox completely but can't reinstall - I think I got that error etc etc
3: finally could reinstall, but only in windows 8.1 safe mode
I will go through the process to confirm this again ASAP when I have wastable time 🙂
Thanks for your response
I tried it again -
Dropbox installation failed with error 0x80004002
I've tried reinstalling as administrator as well - same error

Hello, @noWayToFixUAC...
You're welcome. Thank you for double-checking on the error code.
I searched Google for the error message that you're receiving just so you can see for yourself some possible causes. Please read the article that's listed below for potential causes and fixes.
PLEASE NOTE: It doesn't appear to be a Dropbox related issue even though that's the program you're trying to un/install.
RELATED ARTICLE:
You mentioned that you read a different thread that was solved but nothing helped, however... please scroll downward within the article above to read through the 9-different steps.
Also, please don't dismiss STEP 2 just because your anti-virus program says your computer is clean, malware can disable anti-virus software (making it appear to be working properly). I have worked on hundreds of such computers where the installed anti-virus finds nothing (yes, hundreds over the years)... yet, when I remove the hard drive and scan it externally... malware is found.
IMPORTANT: I am not saying that malware is what's causing your particular problem, but you need to be aware it could be, even though it doesn't show it.
For starters... focus on Steps 3 through 9 in this article (or... search for other possible solutions that you feel comfortable using).
Thanks,
I am grateful for your advice, but it is the same solution offered on the previous threads, which I have looked into and does not work for me.
I can of course use google, bing, askjeeves, hotbot and the previous UAC posts on this forum to look up error codes, and have done so exhaustively throughout my attempts to fix this, but without joy, which is why I am here 🙂
as far as I know I have not installed, and have never seen "internet download manager" on my system.
It sounds like malware, or at best "vulnerable user who doesen't know better-ware"
I have checked all my installed software, all running processes and all services and can find no reference to
"internet download manager"
The site you link to offers advice for users of "internet download manager" and suggests that it might be
a corrupt installation - I am reluctant to install "internet download manager" since I don't think I have it on my system,
so I don't think I have a corrupt installation of it.
Just to clarify I am reinstalling Dropbox from the offline install package, so I don't need to manage any downloads while installing.
As we know, the problem seems to be linked to Derpbox checking for updates.
I will try to contact Dropbox in person - I guess they don't read the forums.
Thanks again for your help.

I'll leave this thread open as the problem has affected other people,
I acknowledge that it may not be 100% related to dropbox and could be the fault of some other program
- but dropbox is the only program on my computer that is causing this error message, everything else updates and works fine.

Hello, @noWayToFixUAC...
Sounds good.
