Ubuntu 20.04 filestatus unwatched

Ubuntu 20.04 filestatus unwatched

Hi,

I just realized that my dropbox does not seem to watch my local file changes anymore, presumably since I upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04.

If I go to my dropbox folder then check the file status, here is what I get:

$ cd ~/Dropbox

$ dropbox filestatus

folder1:    unwatched

folder2:   unwatched

fileA:       unwatched

Despite my dropbox status being 'Syncing...'.

Can you please help me figure out what's wrong?

Thank you.

Hey @Maxime Beau; welcome to the Community!

Approximately how many files do you have syncing on this device?

If by any chance, you've hit the default limit for Linux of 10000 folders, note that this limit can be changed by running the following command in a terminal:

sudo sysctl fs.inotify.max_user_watches=100000

To make this limit permanent you can edit the file /etc/sysctl.conf and add the same command, but without the "sudo sysctl".

Let me know if syncing gets stuck again, Maxime.

Thank you for your answer!

Indeed I just added a bunch of pictures to my dropbox recently and did hit this limit - I know have 110000 files in my dropbox.

I followed your instructions but set these values to 200000 instead of 100000 as advised. Would it lead to any issue? Is there any upper bound to this value? Why isn't it shared across machines? Is there a way to harmonize this number on all the devices where my account is setup?

In anyway, the files are still labelled 'unwatched'. Do I need to reboot my machine?

Thank you.
