Updated Microsoft Office, error message

I have the most up-to-date version of Microsoft Word for Students (365) but it keeps giving me this error message when I try to track changes. I've tried from Chrome and Firefox with no luck.

"Sorry, but to open this document, your computer must be running a supported version of Microsoft Word and a browser that supports opening files directly from Office."

Any ideas here?

Hello @taylor333 - welcome to our Community!

At first, could you clarify what version of Microsoft Word are you running on the affected computer?  Have you tried re-installing the software in question on your device? 

If you could forward me a screenshot of the exact error you get, that'd be amazing. 

Last but not least -merely to exclude browser specific issues-  please let me know if the issue persists after you've cleared your browser's cache or a completely different browser with no extensions or plugins running.

Another user found a solution and it worked for me too. Our mistake was assuming that we could open a password-protected Word document in Dropbox. Evidentally we can't, and it would be good if Dropbox just told us that instead of the vague messages about needing to use a supported version of Word and a supported browser. 

So instead of trying to open the password-protected Word document in "Word Online", then trying desktop Word,  as directed by Dropbox's error popup boxess, download the file instead. Click on the ..., then download it to the local hard drive. Then you will be prompted to enter the password, etc., as usual.
