Upgrading to a new Mac. Reinstall files from Time Machine or download from DB?

Helpful | Level 5

I'm soon moving from my 2014 MacBook Air to a 2019 MacBook Pro. My MBAir is fully backed up on Time Machine, including the files that Dropbox syncs. (I like redundancy.)

Is there a way for me to install DB, but copy the files from my latest MBAir TM backup,in order to avoid having DB download those hundreds of gigabytes? Or should I just install Dropbox and let it download until it's blue in the face?

Or is there a third and better option I'm missing?

Thanks.

You can do either, but, if I'm honest I've always found downloading the easiest - and quickest! But I always make sure old device is left on the network so I can use LAN sync.

If you do want to use the timemachine back up then you'll find it will take a long time to reindex the data and you may get lots of odd errors saying you've left/joined/moved files and folders etc. Please do not panic and just let them do it

I have a related question. My MacBook Pro (~2015) failed 6 months ago, and I have been using a temporary computer since then. I’ve just gotten a new MacBook Air, which I would like to update with my old data from the MBP and also sync with Dropbox. I have a time machine backup of my hard drive circa July 2019, which includes the Dropbox folder. But I have been working with my Dropbox files since then, and so there are many discrepancies between the Dropbox files in time machine and the Dropbox files online. What I would like to happen is for the current Dropbox files online to overwrite the outdated files on my MBA. What I really want to avoid is having the old files that have been transferred to my MBA overwriting what is online.
To this point I have done the time machine migration to my new computer but I haven’t synced it to Dropbox.
Can you give any advice on this?
Thanks

Hello @Lomax321!

I understand you want the online files you have in Dropbox, to overwrite the old Dropbox folder you have and sync with your Time machine back up.

Here is how you can accomplish this.

  1. You first install the Dropbox desktop app and you let it sync all your files from the cloud.
  2. You can then delete your old Dropbox folder from your Time Machine.
  3. Final step is to symlink the files from Dropbox to Time machine or manually copy them there.

Hit me up for any questions and let me know if this worked for you.

Thank you!
