Can Dropbox automatically stop Syncing when I am on my hotspot?

I use dropbox to sync photos are work. During my commute, I use a portable hotspot. Dropbox is syncing during my commute and eating up my Data plan. Is there a method to be able to automatically pause it when I am on my laptop especially on battery power? I know I can manually pause it but then I may not remember to re-start it at work.

Yes, I am still having this issue. I basically have to pause Dropbox syncing. Rather inconvenient.

I'm asking if and when the dropbox software (not the store app...) will be aware of the metered connections of Win 8.1 and act accordingly.

ES. Not syncing while on the metered connection as One Drive do.

Thank you
Francesco

Me too! I take a look for a solution to turn off the sync while I connect my tablet through a Mobile Hotspot to the internet.

An excellent question about a useful feature that would be simple to implement -- would somebody from Dropbox care to comment?

Support for metered connections?

New member | Level 1

Hi,

Just wondering if there is going to be/or already is - support for metered connections (devices tethered to mobile hotspots for example). Just noticed that when I have Windows 8.1 tethered, the Dropbox application was synching files - even though the windows connection was set to metered.
If this functionality does not exist, what is the process involved in putting in an official request (just need a 'don't sync over metered connections' option like OneDrive has on windows).

You can get application internet control programs, that control what applications get access to the internet over what connections, this is a far more useful tool than asking per application to have it built in. Once installed if you go tethered and an application wants internet, the control program, asks you if its ok (much like some antivirus programs will halt a application executing asking for permission). In this way you can control which what when on whos getting internet access.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your answer - I'll look into those options.
It is my preference that when an app is created for a platform that it follows the standards for that platform. Since Dropbox runs as a 32bit Windows App in the background (and not a managed windows service) it would be reasonable to expect it to conform as well.

It is a requirement for developing Windows Runtime Apps for them to handle connections (including metered connections) - mainly because many devices including windows desktops can be connected to mobile or data rated networks.

Regards
Andy
