installation issues - Permissions error

installation issues - Permissions error

I am unable to install Dropbox 46.4.65 on Windows 7 Pro x64.

Tried both regular and offline installers.

Tried Advanced re-install as documented on web site.

I have un-installed all antivirus and firewall software and attempted both regular and offline Dropbox installs with no joy.

Computer does not show up in list of devices when I log in to Dropbox through web browser.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Hey @WerLafel,

Thanks for the additional info - much appreciated! I have already provided an update on your ticket - you can also check your emails 😉

Just keep in mind that generally speaking the specific error you get means that Dropbox is attempting to access vital account information using your Windows Registry, but is being denied permission.

In most cases, it's possible that access to the registry is protected by the account credentials of an old or out-of-date user account. Resetting your Windows password should fix this problem as best outlined here!

Talk to you via email but I hope this helps in the meantime!

Thank you, dropboxers, for your assistance!
This is a fresh install of W7Pro with no antivirus or firewall software running, so I was quite surprised to encounter such 'Permissions' issues.

* Resetting/removing the Windows password did not resolve the issue.
* Adjusting file permissions from both the GUI and command line did not resolve the issue.
* Adjusting permissions/ownership within the Windows Registry did not resolve the issue.

*** I WAS eventually able to successfully install Dropbox by taking ownership and DELETING ALL 'DROPBOX' -related keys within the registry.

Thank you, again, for your timely responses and assistance!!

I am having this exact issue when trying to update network controlled AWS workspaces. The initial error is that the user needs to update Dropbox to a new version. When I try to update it I get the same error as listed above. Thanks for your help.

Sorry to hear that @RRHIO - have you tried contacting Amazon and ask more about this directly?

If your setup is meeting our minimum requirement on a supported configuation you shouldn't be getting those errors.

Also, have you tried re-installing using our latest stable version of the client (i.e. the desktop app) - currently 60.4.107

Keep me posted on your findings and happy Monday!

Hi there,

I also encountered this problem. The thing is I have been using Dropbox for quite a long time on the same laptop with no issue. But one or two days ago, it's stuck in syncing. Follow other instructions from Dropbox to fix but it won't work. So I uninstalled it and it worked but cannot re-installed due to permission errors. I restored the window system to the date when I still have Dropbox, and try to uninstall it, but now it keeps informing that Fail to uninstall. Any idea how to fix this issue? Appreciate your support. Thank you.

Hi @JenNguyen; thanks for joining the discussion.

Can you please clarify what issue you'd like us to focus on?

If it's for the permissions error you got when tryig to start the desktop app before your system's restore I'll need to get and analyze the full error log that corresponds to the error message pop-up you are/were getting by clicking onthe blue hypertext within the error message.

If you'd like to tackle the issue with uninstalling, try quitting all the Dropbox related processes from your computer's Task Manager and then follow the regular instructions

In either case, please keep me posted!
