the .dropbox folder in my Users folder

the .dropbox folder in my Users folder

I recently had to scramble to reduce space on my laptop, including choosing folders for selected syncing because they were swamping my application space.

I came across this folder (see screenshot) that is taking an inordinate amount of space on my machine, but no idea a) what it does b) whether it's significant to syncing or c) how to get rid of it.

Any ideas?

a) it is the Dropbox cache

b) yes it is essential. Remove it and syncing/Dropbox will not work

c) you can't

Thank you. I think 450Mb is rather a large file size for syncing and encourage the Dropbox programmers to see how this can be reduced.

450mb is a TINY size really.

Remember that is holding ALL of the data structures in your files and is where all your downloaded files are before being moved to Dropbox AND previously deleted files for 3 days for quick restores.

a) I think thats actually the user settings folder, which means its even more important than the cache.

b) only if you want syncing

c) Unlink and delete it and relink, the "sigstore.dbx" file might get smaller, but if your concerned down to a few 100 meg, you need install a bigger hard drive, they are dirt cheap.

Your not going to save enough to make it worthwhile anyway, SIGSTORE.DBX stores the signature of 2MB blocks of your files in DB, it builds beyond the content size as it records historical file block signatures, as the DB server will upload these by signature alone as it has the blocks on the server already. Such that any rebuild of it will loose the heightened upload speed ability of the client to upload previously held blocks of files.

* I now also expect unlinking may delete this file anyway.
