Does Dropbox support the concept of Home Folders?

Does Dropbox support the concept of Home Folders?

Helpful | Level 5

Does Dropbox support the concept of Home Folders for each user? We're moving from Egnyte, which provides each user with a private folder (named JDOE is the user's username is JDOE) and I need to mirror this on Dropbox.

What is the best way to proceed with migrating our private folders from Egnyte to Dropbox, and linking each home folder with each user's Dropbox Business account?

Dropbox doesnt do 'Home Folders' as such. What it does instead is create 'Dropbox' folder for each person (you need to install it on each device for that). Use THAT as the home folder as nothing in it is shared to anywhere else unless they explicitly do it.

Thank you for your response. This is helpful to understand the concept.

I am not sure, from the perspective of an administrator, how to populate each users Dropbox folder throughout the organization with the data from the previous service. Do you have any suggestions for that?

Hey there (@CE1), while there are some available third-party applications you could utilize to get going with the file transfer, I can also see on my end that your open request on our system has reached our specialists’ inbox. I’ve made sure to include a copy of your comments here, just in order to keep all relevant info in the same email chain. Please include any follow-up questions you have on that correspondence & rest assured that they’ll do their best to further advise you.

I hope that this is helpful to you & please do let me know here in case you need further assistance in any way & I’ll check back with you asap. Thanks!

Jane, thank you for your response. Just to close the loop on this topic, what we did as a team is create a Team folder called Private Folders, and then uploaded each user's home folder into that folder. We gave each individual user permission to their private folder (lots of clicking, but it isn't that bad for our user count) and we hope to be able to give our users the same private-folder experience that they expect.

Thanks for letting me know of the steps you followed to get going on this matter (@CE1)! While the temporary workaround you’ve posted us here seems to have done the trick for you at the moment, I can also see that our team specialist sent you a brief message yesterday in regards to your second request.

Feel free to drop us a line again in case you have any additional questions or thoughts; we’re just a post away. Thanks for choosing Dropbox & have a wonderful rest of your day ahead!
