Dropbox move leaves undeletable files and folder at old location

Dropbox move leaves undeletable files and folder at old location

Explorer | Level 4

Recently I've had to move the dropbox account location to another drive.  The move went reasonably seamless however it failed to remove the files and directories in the old location.

I tried to clean that area up today, and I don't have the necessary privledges to delete them.  I've logged in as administrator, local administrator, myself and still no go.

I've forced the owner of that directory and all its children to a known user (through the security tab) and still cannot delete.

The error I get is 'you need permissions to perform this action.

It would appear the old directory structure was created with our old domain name.  i.e.

domain1\administrator

and I am trying to delete wth

domain2\administrator

Any ideas on how to remove this?  Obviously domain1\administrator no longer exists.

Thanks for the extra info. Yeah, it looks like the operating system admin situation is the issue indeed. The error you are getting (you need permissions to perform this action) is coming from Windows, and seems to be solvable by adjusting the security properties of the folder(s) in question. I’ve just done a quick online search for the above-mentioned error message, and several results popped up that I think you would find helpful. From what I can tell, basically you’ll be changing the owner of the folders, so you can do with them as you please

I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.
Cheers!

Hey,

just had the same issue on Linux.

Opened the old Dropbox folder as administrator and deleted the remaining files

Hey @SilentJ, welcome to our forum!

How did you move the folder? Did you use our desktop app to make the move

Are all the folders now in the new location, and you have some duplicates that were left in the old location? Are these folder perhaps part of a Business team account?

Let me know when you have a chance.
Thanks!

Hi Sanchez,

Thanks for the reply

  • The files were moved with the dropbox ap for windows.
  • It was a dropbox paid account, but not business account.
  • The folders were shared from other users drop boxes with the exception of one parent folder.
  • All folders have been synced to the new location successfully, I just can't clean the old location.

Thanks in advance
