Giving a shared folder to the right owner

Bauhinia

Hi, I have a Dropbox for Business account and have created a Team Folder that my employees have access to. In the folder we have multiple folders related to client work. Each client is also given access to their folder.

When a client finishes their contract with us, I want to give them complete control of their folder. I thought by leaving the folder, it would no long be under my account but it still seems to be part of my business account.

What is the best way of moving the folder? Do I need to remove the client, move the folder to my personal account, reinvite the client and leave the folder?

Thanks!

Hey Bauhinia, welcome to our Forum & thanks for checking in with us on your sharing question, I’d happily send you some advice below & we’ll take it from there!

As it’s my understanding that you’ve managed your folderstructure in such a way that enables you to share your sub-folders with your Clients outside your Dropbox for Business account, I’d suggest transferring the ownership to them once your project has finished & then removing your access from the share (if so need be) altogether. The advantage will be that previous version history will remain intact, though transferred to the second account (i.e. & will be accessible to them, according to their plan).

Hopefully this addresses your sharing-specific question, though please let me know how these steps work for you in your next post & I’ll follow-up with you as closely as possible. Happy Monday!

Thank you Jane for your prompt and detailed answer.

For one client, I transferred ownership to her and stayed on the Dropbox folder, however, she could not add anyone to the Dropbox folder and when I look at the settings of the folder, it tells me the client and her colleague are "Outside your Dropbox team". I'm concerned if I leave the folder she will not be able to add additional people because I originally set up the folder within my Dropbox for Business account, and she's using a Personal Account.

I don't want her to get stuck somewhere in cyber space.

Thanks a lot for checking back with me here Bauhinia, let me follow-up with you a bit more closely!

I consulted with a specialist on the matter & they analyzed this in a bit more detail, so let me relay the extra info they gave me on this behavior.

You may keep in mind that in this specific setup shared folders under Team Folders should act independently, despite the team permissions imposed. In this particular scenario it’s highly likely that a setting has been overwriting your Client’s Owner permissions, therefore can you slightly adjust your settings as per:

  • Who can be invited to this folder? - Should be set to Anyone”.
  • Who can manage access to this folder? -Should be set to Only owners”.
Does she get any error messages upon trying to send the invites by any chance?

Please do let me know of the outcome in your next post & I’ll do my best to have a closer look with you. Wishing you a wonderful rest of your day!
