Why does Dropbox require admin privileges on OS X?

Why does Dropbox require admin privileges on OS X?

New member | Level 2

After installing Dropbox (6.4.14) on my mac, it asked for my admin password, but did not say why.  It prompts again after every reboot.  I would like to know specifically what does Dropbox do that requires admin privileges?  As far as I can tell, it's working just fine without that.

It is to insert the icon overlays and context menus.

By overlays, do you mean the green checkmark and the blue syncing icon?  Those are working fine.  And the context menu is working too.

It maybe that they need updating depending upon the version you are using.

Some older versions did include issues.

I'm sure there's a good reason for admin privileges, some feature that won't work without it. But I can't figure out what it is. It would be nice if the app would give you a choice whether or not to enable this feature.
