selective sync updates folders, but not the files within them

New member | Level 2

hi there,

i have been using a personal account for many years with no issue. for my new job, i connected my business account, and i was able to get them both to show up successfully on my desktop.

however, when i use selective sync on the business account, it loads about 20 gigs of material in under a minute. to my surprise, the folders that i have selected are all updated, but all of the individual working-files within the folders all appear, but show a cloud icon beside them.

this is weird, because i have smart-sync turned off. the current settings have "let my admin manage this setting" unchecked, and start as: "local" selected.

as i mentioned, i can see each of the files in the folder, but they are all still on the cloud. that means i have to download each individual file when i want to look at them. this is particularly frustrating when i want to scroll through images, i have to download each one by double-click each and every file within the folder.

how can i get my files to sync when i choose (ie, select) which folders to sync?

thanks in advance.

Hi there, if you’re referring to the scenario whereby a folder that was previously unchecked in selective sync was later checked, to allow it to sync, and the files only downloaded as online only via Smart Sync?

If so, then this is normal behavior for any re-checked selective sync folder, regardless of any Smart Sync setting on your machine.

If you’d like the entire folder to be local once it was unchecked, simply right click the folder and choose the local option for Dropbox to download the whole folder.

Hope this helps!

this isn't clear to me.

i have my smart sync set to local, so how come i still have to sync each individual file after i've already selected each individual folder? i am attempting to sync gigs of folders and files and once i've already gone through once to select the folders i want, i now have to go through again and sync each file within the folders. but shouldn't dropbox already do that if the setting is set to local? that's how my "personal" account function that if i select the folder, it syncs the contents of that folder as well.

this is quite confusing, and incredibly frustrating, to say the least.

This is only the case when reselecting folders from selective sync.

If you’re adding files on the Dropbox site, and your local settings are online-only, then only the placeholders will sync down, so it won’t take up space.

Once those folders are online-only on your machine, they won’t return to local unless you download or mark them as local yourself.

Hope this helps to clarify matters.
