Feature Request for Sync Prioritization

Explorer | Level 4

I'm a photographer/videographer and Dropbox Business is excellent for my needs to backup and share data. Huge challenge comes again and again when I have assignment work synced to Dropbox (from some trips it's few hundreds gigs, last trip over 380GB) while it takes a long time to sync on road there will be huge batch left to be synced when coming home. Meanwhile if I have some important documents to backup and share I'm really in trouble since syncing might take days.

So my most humble wish would be able to prioritize folders! Thanks!

Current Status: New

We're often shooting quite a bit of data around between sites, and can get into a situation where we are simultaneously transferring some very large files, as well as some urgent tiny files. Currently the only workaround is to leave the big files syncing and manually upload the small files through, which is really painful.

Another scenario is that we have two very large files to transfer, both important but we want to be sure one is transferred overnight. Currently the only way to ensure this is to transfer them one at a time, which isn't very fun when you need to set an alarm for 3am to get up and copy the next file across. This seems very "un-dropbox!" it should all be easy and automatic.

It would be a great general feature to be able to prioritise uploads/downloads. This can be a simple transfer list with buttons or drag to reshuffle them. Prioritizing the transfer order is common in other heavy data transfer situations, e.g. torrent clients

I also feel this feature would be VERY useful.

Status changed to: New

Excellent feedback @Juha - as an (amateur) videomaker myself, I find similar strugles when I need to upload some files with higher priority than others.

What I tend to do is to add the priority files onto my Dropbox folder first and let them sync. Once it's done I'll then move all the rest to Dropbox (it does take a big of HD space while it's being done but it's a workaround while we don't have a prioritization feature).

I can see that this has been requested before, but nothing has been done about it.

By default newly changed folders or files are sync'd by smallest files first.  I have to have control and force specific updates to share with people now.  If I sync the file manually I risk sync conflicts.  This is unacceptable because it risks file versions getting out of sync.

When is the "Force Sync Now" functional requirement going to be met?

Hey there @lysakowski - thank for bringing this up!

As this has been indeed requested in the past and we really value your input while creating the next version of our app, I have made sure to pass your comments to our dev team for consideration.

Thank you for your feedback and have an awesome day ahead!

I could use this feature quite often. There are a lot of times that I have to quarantine folders to outside of dropbox to prioritize other files. It could be as simple as a right click - prioritize/deprioritize with an icon status indicator.

I work in media and when I'm generating a lot of assets, but also trying to deliver specific files to a client, I need to be able to prioritize uploads.

Thanks Ed, but, because I work on many subjects during the same journey (Im architect and have the same trouble than Juha), its often some hours after having started the big sync that it appears to me that I need a specific file or folder that is on the cloud...

So I decided to have all my files already sinced on my main computer.

By this method, the interest of the cloud function, just vanish. And I agree that it is not be the best solution according to dropbox concept.

The worst thing to us is to begin a task and be stopped because we cannot access one single file !!

Or we just have a meeting and we promised to share one file within the hour... Shamed, we appology that our dropbox is occuped...

Sometime I notice that opening a cloud file prioritize its upload, but not in all situations (eg when dropbox stil looking for modifications). So this solution is not meeting the goal.

That's the real professionnal life : speed and flexibilité is needed.

Solution suggested :

Just allow to prioritize about 10 files (not more) would be a great progress

It doesn't sound to be very difficult

Dropbox already knows to pause the sync and restart at the point where it stopped.

Then it can do de 10 sync and restart

While the 10 are sinced, the priority stops

If this files are modifies after the priority sync, they take their turn in normal queue to resync.

Then priority ended, the user is again free to restart a new order of priority on a new set of files...

Limitting the number of prioritized files simplify the integration of this movement in the main sync strean when it will restart and avoid to block the process a second time (both sync too long).

This solution would solve 95% of the needs

100% wil be reached manually by using it 2 or 3 times.

For more files, our behaviour and solutions are differents and can stay as now.

Thanks to transmit

Yes, that would be splendid solution. To be able to manually select 10 priority files would resolve most urgent and sudden needs for quick syncing and getting needed files available to all.

I am in desparate need for this feature. Please implement this!

Hey folks - I hope this finds you all well!

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that this has been implemented recently for some users on our most recent BETA version of the desktop app (65.3.160) - you might want to try it out as well winking face

A quick note on Beta Services: We sometimes release products and features that we are still testing and evaluating. Those Services have been marked beta, preview, early access, or evaluation (or with words or phrases with similar meanings) and may not be as reliable as Dropbox’s other services, so please keep that in mind when using these services.
