I am getting a 404 error when accessing a shared link.

I keep getting a 404 error when I try to access a shared link a friend sent me. I was worried I didn't have have enough space so I deleted all my other stuff from my dropbox and I STILL get a 404 error when trying to access the link.

Hey there @stuartlaforge - in this case, I'd ask them to restore the file(s) their link was pointing to. Read on for more info:

Shared links will break if the file has been deleted from its Dropbox folder. Please have the original owner of the file and link in question check to see that the file is still located in their Dropbox folder. They can look at the deleted files on the following page:

https://www.dropbox.com/deleted_files

Please also be aware that there is a 20GB daily limit on link traffic for Basic accounts, and a 200GB daily limit for paid accounts. Exceeding this limit will disable the shared links on the account that generated them.

I hope this helps to some extent Stuart and please let me know if you have any further queries.

Re: I am getting a 404 error when accessing a shared link.

No you don't understand. I have been constantly getting notifications of links he has shared with me. For the last 2 years every time I try to access a link he has sent me, I have recieved a 404 error. The last thing he had shared with me that I had access to was over 2 years ago.

I thought that this was because, I had exceeded my space alotment so I tried to free up space by deleting everthing that I had in my account. But this did not work. It STILL gives me a 404 error.

These actions (i.e. the deletions on your account) wouldn't have anything to do with your friend's broken shared links @stuartlaforge

In order to mitigate this I'd advise to have him log a ticket with our support team and ask about this directly (as this is his shared link(s) we're talking about).

They can do it via this page directly: https://www.dropbox.com/support

Cheers!
