I have 1 folder that is acting very oddly.

Level 3

a couple of things are happening

when you rename a file it will not save to the new name OR you get an error saying the file extension is too long even if you rename it shorter.

Sometimes on opening a file the erro pos up that the path cannot be found.

this only happens for 1 particular folder and I have thousands.

Certainly sounds like a path length limit that you're running into. From the top of the drive to the end of the file extension, what's the total character count for the full path to that file?

Is it over 260, or 218 in the case of an Excel file, including the drive letter? Those are the character count limits on Windows.

Can you create a new folder with a short name, and move the files from the bad folder into it? Does it still act weird if you do so?

yes I have tried your suggestion a number of times but it still acts weird. e.g the New Text Doc ( as below) can be created but it can't be renamed. There is no error message just it does not save
