not able to start dropbox

Level 2

Hej community,

I wish to install dropbox (on apple macbook air) but after installing I get the message: "dopbox could not be startet.

This usually indicates an authorization error. Also, saving the base folder on a network share can cause an error."

Please ask support with the following link:

Thanks for including the error in your post, @Oliver71! Definitely helps in having a better understanding of your concern.

The error that you’re seeing could possibly be due to the Home directory being "locked". In such a case, you can try the following:

First, right-click on your Home folder ( /Users/{your username} ) and choose "Get Info". Then, uncheck the "Locked" checkbox.

If you would like to perform these actions through the command line, you can do so with the following steps:
  1. Open the Terminal (found in /Applications/Utilites).
  2. Copy and paste the following line into the Terminal and press RETURN. You'll be prompted for your computer user's password (not your Dropbox password) after entering the first command.
sudo chflags -R nouchg ~

Please note that if you have on purpose locked any folders in your Home folder, this will unlock them. After doing this, you can re-lock any folders that need to and aren’t in your Dropbox folder.

Another possible cause of such a behavior would be local network sharing or folder redirection preferences setup in folders or files within your Dropbox.

Similar effects can also happen when your Dropbox folder or its system files are located in a mounted network drive or a remote location (like roaming profiles) as this could cause Dropbox to not have constant access or permissions to operate in those locations.

For these reasons, I'd suggest that you ensure that your setup doesn't include any of the above scenarios.

In any case, let me know of any updates and I’ll make sure to get back to you as soon as possible!
