Can I open Office files locally?

Explorer | Level 4

Hi,

Is it possible to open an office doc locally rather than with office 365 online?

Note that when I am on the machine where the file is synchronized, I can open it with office installed locally.smiling face with sunglasses

I wish could do the same on other machines in the company ... use local office and not office 365.

Thanks

Hey @newfid!

Thanks for joining the Community and creating this topic.

Yes you can. You must have the Microsoft Office app installed locally for the files to Open locally. winking face

Let me know if you have more Dropbox questions.

Thank you!

Hi Flona,

And how?face screaming in fear

Because when I open from dropbox online, I only have the option to choose "...online" or "download".

There are 2 ways to do it.

1. You install the Dropbox desktop application that syncs your files from the cloud to your computer and you open them in the local Dropbox folder the app will create for you, using the Microsoft apps you have installed in your computer. Any updates you make on files that are in the Dropbox folder, sync to the cloud automatically.

2. You hit the download option you have there, this gets the file saved to the downloads of your computer, you update the file with Microsoft Office locally and then, if you want to, you can upload the edited version to Dropbox.com again.

So, with your 1st solution, this forces me to have the files also in my local folder.

Therefore, I cannot open these files using the Microsoft apps installed in my computer if they are only located in the local drop folder from another computer.crying face

Not sure I understand the concern. thinking face

The only way your local Microsoft Office app can open the Dropbox files, is by saving the files locally in your computer.

The Dropbox desktop application can be installed on another computer of yours. This way all the files will sync from computer A to computer B and of course the Dropbox cloud.

Same files everywhere. winking face
