Current dropbox files were replaced by older files after a restore and I can't load version history

I recently  had an issue with a virtual machine. That machine was restored containing very old versions of files. When the machine loaded, dropbox service went up and updated the files to that older version meaning that the version history would have to show newer versions of files than the current versions actually on Dropbox. It is a bit weird, but the history should really show newer versions of my files.

Right now, if I click on version history, I get error messages. Anyone is able to help with that?

Hey @lu_martins, welcome to the Dropbox Community, and sorry to hear that you're having trouble with this. 

As a first step, could you please try a different browser or use an incognito window? 

Could you also make sure that you don't have any third party extensions or plugins running? 

Finally, could you also check your events page for more info on any changes that occurred recently to files in your account? 

Let me know what you find!

Thanks Lusil!

 

I actually did it on Incognito and got the same error.

On my events, the weird thing is that I only see a change in a file in October, that is the version Dropbox has right now.

Thanks for getting back to me, @lu_martins

If you can't find a version history, could it be that you're on a plan where the time period available has passed? 

For example, if you're on a Dropbox Basic/Plus account, the available recovery for file edits or deletions is up to 30 days.

Also, since there aren't any events shown for the files after October, it most likely means that the platforms did not record any changes to the files in question. 

More specifically, it sounds like:

  • The desktop app on your virtual machine wasn't running/syncing to the Dropbox website since October while you were making these edits to the files. 
  • After recovering the virtual machine with older versions of the files and running the desktop app, the website found them as the current versions.

I understand that this isn't the ideal reply you were looking for, but if there's anything else I can do from my end, please let me know. Thanks!

Hi Lusil, it makes sense. I think the server stopped syncing for a while then.
