Database which we can use in Dropbox?

New member | Level 2

Does anyone know which database we can use in Dropbox? We need a simple database, sort of a rolodex to file stuff and we have to be able to share it with our team. Any tips?

Hi there, generally, we recommend that people don’t sync live databases with Dropbox.

Most programs create a "file lock" on any file that they are using, and this lock will prevent Dropbox from syncing the file. In some cases you must fully quit the application before Dropbox can sync the data.

You must then make sure Dropbox has finished syncing before trying to access the file from any computer.

I hope this helps to clarify matters!

Agreed. Database + Dropbox = BAD!

The thing to remember is that Dropbox doesn't work like a networked drive that you would have in an office server environment, where everyone is accessing the same exact file. With Dropbox, when multiple people open the same file, they're actually opening their own COPY of the same file.

Any changes made to the file will sync to everyone, but if multiple people open the file and try to save a change, Dropbox will create conflicted copies. It does this so noone overwrites the changes of another person. For a document this isn't so bad as it's easy to merge multiple changes, but for a database it's a nightmare, and in extreme cases can damage the database file.
