Delete files from a members PC.

New member | Level 2

Hello,

I browsed the net and forum for answer to my question, but haven't met exact situation as mine.
My situation:
I am owner of a Dropbox folder.
I have 5 member that can edit the folder (members of our company).
1 member left our team.

I want to remove him from members to whom the folder is shared. This is clear how to manage.
But I want more. I want all the files from this folder, to be deleted on this member's account/home PC.
I found a trace that I might be able to do this via "business Dropbox" option, but I'm not sure if I understand correctly the situation and what will I have to pay. I want to keep the situation as cheap as possible.

Can you suggest me a solution, of how to remove a person from share-members and delete the sensitive data from his Dropbox account (by this, I imply that sensitive data must be deleted from his PC as well) ?

Thank you.

Hi @Kycau

If you’d like to remove them from a shared folder that you own, you can just unshare it and when given the option to Remove, you’ll also get the option to Let [user] keep a copy of this shared folder - ensure that that option is not marked with a tick if you don’t want them to have a copy of the folder.

I hope this helped clarify!

Thank you,

99% clear slightly smiling face

I can understand that text 2 ways:

Remove XXXXX?
If you remove XXXXX, they won’t be able to see future changes to this shared folder.
Let XXXX keep a copy of this shared folder

1. If I remove, XXXX won't be able to see future changes to this folder... but that implies that he keeps the old version of files.
2. If I remove, XXXXX won't be able to see future changes, and he'll lose current folder with all it's content.

Which is correct ?

For future readers of this topic.
Me, the owner of the shared folder.
I logged in on dropbox web-site, and removed the account from sharing the folder.
I left the check-box "let him keep a copy" unchecked, and as a result - the folder was deleted from the PC, on which he logged his dropbox account.

If you tick the box which related to the option Let [user] keep a copy of this shared folder,  then the user will keep a copy that won’t be updated with changes applied beyond that point. However, if you don’t, then a copy won’t be left behind.

I also wanted to mention that, in general, members of a shared folder are able to download the folder or its files locally on their computer. As such, if the user downloaded content, although there isn’t an option to delete it from your end, that folder would be separate from the shared folder, which would mean that content doesn’t sync changes once they downloaded it.

I just wanted to note this so as to ensure that we cover all ground and possibilities when it comes to unsharing. Let me know if you have any other questions, @Kycau! grinning face with smiling eyes
