I PAY for DropBox PRO.
I too am having this problem..
I delete large files. The files and folders ARE NOT SHARED.
Then I permently delete them, Then I empy the cache. Then I shut down DropBox.
I opened it back up.
NOTHING. No spaced opened up.
So I then deleted DropBox from my iPhone and iPad.
I am at a total loss. This product is Bad News. Very Very disapointed.
Yes - DropBox will lose Business.
Especially since Amazon Prime now has a service where you can store UNLIMITED Photos and home videos.
And I pay for DropBox and deal with this idiotic crap. Many many lost hours today dealing with this issue, to no avail.
Same with me!!!
delted files, removed shared folders, emptied cash and no space is freed!!!!
Amazing that this is a 'dropbox community' site and they keep fooling us since 2015 on this issue.
Pretending everything has been said and that basically we're dumb and do not understand 'shared folders recreate space'.
I followed all procedures according to their site and no change.
In any case I have deleted nonshared folders and here too, no change.
Business' dirty little secrets and practices....
You must leave any shared-folders; you must have enough space in your hard drive and enough space in your DB account.
Shared-folders can act like a baloon, filling your account even as you delete files of your own.
You can use Selective Sync to keep files in DB account but not on your hard drive.

It sucks that so many people are having trouble with this. This is what I did and it worked for me.
First, I logged our all my devlices. Made sure all the apps are logged off as well. I have two iPads, two iMacs, two iPhones. It was a pain and follow this to the end. After making sure everything is logged out and not connected to the dropbox server I then logged in with safari. once there, I proceeded to delete unwanted files then folders. then proceeded to "perminatly delete" the same files then folders. Right away it appeaerd not to work. wait for it. to make sure all the unwanted files and folders were gone, on both iMacs, I deleted the files and folderes BEFORE re-connecting to the dropbox seerver with the app.
I know, its a pain the the butt...
