Does folder to be put in Dropbox have to be moved to it, or will a shortcut suffice?

Level 3

I know that if you put files and folders from a PC into the Dropbox folder, they will be kept on the Dropbox servers, and updated as the PC files are updated.

What if I put a shortcut to the subject files into the Dropbox folder? For example, if I want to put the entire <User> folder(and subfolders) for a given user into Dropbox, can I just put in a shortcut to the User folder into Dropbox?

Hi there @Liberty4Ever

In general, when attempting to create a shortcut for a folder from one location on your computer to your local Dropbox folder, it won’t sync as a folder on the website. More precisely, the shortcut will work for you on your computer but it will be synced as a shortcut file. You can check out some more info on this in this thread discussed by @Walter and @Sanchez.

I also wanted to mention though that what you could try is to move your data into the Dropbox folder and then create a symlink where it was previously located. That way, the symlink is outside of the Dropbox folder and the actual data syncs in your Dropbox. However, I’d recommend having a look at this article (step 7) for more relevant info.

I hope this helps to some extent!
