Re: Dropbox + Mac Catalina = Beachballing

Helpful | Level 5

I'm in trouble with my macOS Catalina 10.15.3 (19D76) because of the same problem.

My environment => iMac (27-inch, 2019) CPU: 3.0 GHz Intel Core i5, Boot Disk:
Built-in SSD 512GB, Memory: 40GB

I think that it is not a synchronization problem because it will occur even if the network is turned off.

Excuse me for jumping in.

I have same issue that brunomp reporting.

For example, Beachballing happens:

  1. doble-click to open image files or something on Preview.app
  2. beachballing for 1-2 seconds immediately after the window opens
  3. It does not recur during application launch, but recurs when the application is launched again

It is not a phenomenon limited to Preview.app.

This is my (macOS's) info:

  • Number of files in dropbox = 1,893 files/folders (about 4.7GB)
  • Dropbox.app = v90.4.307
  • Dropbox.app network pref = no-limmit for DL, auto-limmit for UL
  • Dropbox.app other settings = default
  • iMac 5K 2017 + macOS 10.15.3 + 24GB RAM + 1TB Fusion Drive (not SSD model)
  • internet speed = 66Mbps for download, 42Mbps for upload, ping 33 ms

Yesterday, I erase my Mac's drive and re-installed macOS Catalina (mean clean-install) without using backup files.

There was no problem before installing Dropbox, but the problem was reproduced when I install Dropbox.app.

And still happens same trouble when I turned off my Mac's internet connection (=off line).

So, I feel that the sync method and bandwidth settings are not relevant to this problem.

However, if you disable the Finder extension settings as shown in the image below, no trouble will occur. The phenomenon does not occur, but the operability deteriorates.

I do not speak English well, so sorry for my poor English and bad explanation.

Thanks.

Oh don't worry guys!

Someone from support will come right up to let you guys know that you only need to check your system, your files and in the end call a "professional" to solve whatever issue you guys are having.

The problem is DEFINITELY AND NEVER within dropbox's app—it's all on you and your system!

So don't worry: soon they will come here to let you know you have a problem and that you should fix it!

👍🏽

Great help folks!

You guys rock!

Dropboxer

Hey everyone, thanks for nudging us on this thread and sorry to hear about your frustration.

I'm more than happy to help look into this with you, I'll just need a bit more info to make sure that I'm on the same page as you. For example:

  • Does it only happen when you try to open specific files or file types? Or does it happen with every file while the desktop app is running?
  • Are the files that you try to open saved as local or online-only when you try to open them by any chance?
  • If you haven't already, could you also check if you're running the stable version of the desktop app (xx.4.xx)?

Let me know what you all find and I'll make sure to get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks!

Hello Lusil, thank you for your reply.

Ans. 1-1:

It doesn't seem to matter specific files, heppens "any file type" that the application support.

ex)

  • Preview.app (Apple)=PNG, JPG, PDF etc
  • QuickTime.app (Apple)=MP4 etc
  • TextEdit.app (Apple)=TXT, RTF etc
  • Jedit Omega (Artman21)=TXT, RTF, HTML etc

Maybe more apps.

Ans. 1-2:

It doesn't seem to matter Dropbox.app is running or not. However, it does not occur when the Finder's Dropbox extension is turned off.

Occurs only for the first file after the application (ex. Preview.app) launch, and does not occur until the application quits.

Ans. 2:

happens at (exapmple):

  • /Users/username/Dropbox/hoge/picture_01.jpeg
  • /Users/username/Desktop/example_01.jpg

Sorry, I don't know how to check on-line only file.

Ans. 3:

I will cooperate as much as possible if you want any other information.
We appreciate your prompt attention to this matter.

Dropboxer

Thanks for getting back to me, @kujax130 and @Ryo_ryomac

Since you mention that the issue persists even if when the desktop app isn't running, it sounds like the cause is related to something outside of the Dropbox app.

You can give these steps a try to refresh the Spotlight index though - maybe that will do the trick.

Let me know how it goes!

Hello Lusil, thank you for your reply.

Rebuilding Spotlight had no improvement.

However, it was implemented from the command line instead of the method taught.

sudo mdutil -E /

Thanks!

Hello Lusil, thank you for your advice.

And Ryo_ryomac, thank you for your report.

Me too.

I did the Spotlight Index reset according to Apple's support document introduced by Lusil, but no improvement was seen. Hmm.....

Thanks!
