How can I remove my files from the computer but keep them on the site?

My dropbox business started to download all the files on my computer, and it's still syncing. I started to smart sync the folders online, but it didn't work. I suppose it still dowloads the files onmy computer, and I don't have enough space... What should I do?

Hey there @ainohei,
If the desktop app is syncing files then it won’t be able to apply the smart sync settings until the sync is finished. What I could suggest would be to either:


1. Remove the desktop app and use only the website (steps in the spoiler below).

  1. Unlink your desktop app from your account.
  2. Uninstall the app.
  3. Remove the Dropbox folder and content from the computer.


2. Unlink the app so that you can change the settings to download files as smart synced (steps below).  

  1. Unlink the desktop app from your account.
  2. Remove all or a section of files from the Dropbox folder to free up some space on your hard drive (the files will be synced back later).
  3. Sign back into the Dropbox app.
  4. Choose to sync files as “Online only” with smart sync.
  5. Allow the app to sync files to the device.
  6. Once sync is “Up to date”, any remaining local files can be changed to “online only” by right clicking and choosing the option “Smart sync - online only”.
