We use Dropbox and autocad. We have a problem when two users access the same file at the same time.

how do we fix this so a user is notified when someone else is accessing the file

In simple terms... you don't.

For Office Documents, there's the Dropbox Badge which will tell you when others open the same file that you're working on. However this doesn't extend to file formats other than Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. No such feature exits for CAD files.

The issue really comes from the fact that two people that open the same file aren't actually opening the same file. They're each opening their own COPY of the file. When this happens, and if both people save changes, one of the copies will be saved as a conflicted copy, so as to not overwrite any changes made by the other person.

The only suggestions would be to first rename a file to include something like INUSE or LOCKED in the filename, or move the file out of Dropbox while editing it.
