I cannot imagine that Dropbox doesn't have a search by exact filename!

New member | Level 2

I'm speaking of files that are not on my computer.

So the socalled "accepted solution" is not available here.

Dropbox offers larger space: that's a good news.

It has to give us the fonctionality that goes with it.

Search by content is nice (but gives many irrelevant results as .jpg, etc).,

By content should just be an option. And we should have

  • a checbox with "Search by filename only"
  • and another one with "Exact name only"
    or
  • "Search by content"

It is unbelievable not to have a search on the exact filename nowadays.

I hope the dev will add this very soon.

Hey there @H C.,

Thanks for letting us know your feedback on this, I’ve made sure to pass along your comments to our dev team for review in future Dropbox improvements.

In the meantime, perhaps I can suggest using example phrase” to help with narrowing down your searches. The list will still populate with all content containing the search terms, but files with a file name containing the exact words and order within the “ ” will be at the top of the results list.

I hope you have a great day - Thanks!

Thanks Delphine for your answer.

You are right: the files with the exact name appear first.

However, let me point out the use case for your devs

  • I tried to find the file with a string contained inside EMAILINGWIN32EVOGEN
the answer was "No results". I verified: six files were containing this exact string.

  • On the other hand, searching for "Projects.INC" most of the files .pdf .pptx .xslx .doc .txt, etc. listed after did not contain even the "Projects" word, neither "INC".

Hey there @H C.,

In regards to your first point, can you let me know which plan you’re currently on? Full text search is available to Dropbox Professional and Business subscription, and soon to come to Dropbox Plus.

For your second point, I’ve also passed this along. Just out of curiosity, if you use a different web browser or incognito/private window, do you see the same seemingly “random” results as you mentioned with the “Projects.INC” search?

Let me know - Cheers!

  • I'm on a Dropbox Plus - 2TB. So, if the full text is not available, I don't understand why it gives so many irrelevant results.
Giving no results would be more appropriate.
And of course, the full text search coming soon to Dropbox Plus is good news!

  • Using a private window gives the same results.
