I have an issue where my Finder crashes. Can you help?

New member | Level 2

I recently starting to have a Finder problem. It started after trying to view a TTF font. Finder crashes when it opens the Dropbox directory. I tried relocating the Dropbox to another drive, then Finder works until I go to Dropbox on that drive. When I quit the Dropbox desktop app the problem goes away. I had to install Commander One as a filemanager to be able to open my files.

macOS High Sierra version 10.13.6

Super User

Hi @HansVR, Just to let you know that Dropbox version xx.3.xxx is a beta build. You may want to install the stable build xx.4.xxx and see if the problem is resolved. Current stable build is 80.4.126. Also, in your account settings, you might need to toggle the Early releases off.

Hey there @HansVR

Did you get the chance to follow @Elixir's suggestions? How did they work out for you?

I have the same problem in ElCap and Sierra. Following the directions at Dropbox.com settings page does not work! Contacting Dropbox help for a long time about this. Their only suggestion, as we all wait for their engineers to fix it, is to uninstall/reinstall DB, and, after that fails, to unlink/link the account., Which also fails.

When will the engineers fix the current DB Finder Inegration bug?

Explorer | Level 4

For months since upgrading DB I have been told egineers are working at fixing the Finder Intergation extension problem. This causes Finder crashes and "not responding" of other apps. Worse, the Settings page does not work to disable these extensions. All the techs have been able to do is have me try uninstalling/reinstalling DB on my Sierra and El Cap Macs. When that fails, they try unlinkin/linking accounts. All fails while we wait for the engineers the techs say they have referred this problem to.

Why did this problem not happen before I upgraded to the paid Dropbox? Probably because I am uploading more files, and at least one other user has found the Finder integration crashes go away when he uploads fewer files!

What's the point of paying DB $100 to get a TB if DB cannot handles a large number of files? Only good if you have a few large files or are lucky enough not to get the crashes.

Also DB.com has a bug where it fails to tell us how many files are in an online folder! It told me I had 22 files in a folder I could see on my Mac had about 22,000 files! The bug is the failure to look recursively inside folders within the folder DB is counting files in! This is a rookie error that should be fized ASAP. But deaspite reporting it to many techs who claim for some time now they have passed it on to the engineers - I have nothing but trouble with DB.

Sorry to hear you're having issues with this @drburt - I'll try my best to help fix this now.

To begin with, could you forward me a screenshot showing the exact status of the desktop app on the affected computer?

Also, can you clear your browser's cache (or try an incognito or even a different browser) and let me know if you still see the discrepancy you mentioned?

While we're at it, also send me a screenshot of how your Dropbox Folder looks like on your computer - merely to check your syncing icons.

Last but not least, could you please try the following steps to attempt to resolve the issue:

1. Click on the Dropbox icon from your Desktop and quit the application
2. Open your Activity Monitor from your Mac Utilities folder
3. Force quit out of the instances of the Dropbox application that are running by searching for "Dropbox" in the search bar, then clicking on the "x" force quit icon on the top left
4. Re-start Dropbox from the applications folder by double clicking on the Dropbox application
5. Click on the Apple icon in the top left of your screen
6. Click on "force quit"
7. Relaunch the finder

Please let me know if this helps!

Hi,

No your steps fix the problem neither on the ELCap nor the Sierra Mac.

I sent screenshots and steps to reproduce the DB item count bug on your end with your own files, so you can see it is a problem with your programming, and not something on my end.

The failure of the settings page routine to stop extensions has also been reported in many chats I have sent. Since I was told engineers would be looking at these problems, I am distressed if you are unable to find a record of my many chats with Dropbox about these problems.

I'm sorry to hear this didn't help at all @drburt. Could you share your ticket's ID (where I guess you've provided screenshots depicting this discrepancy) perhaps?

Thanks!
