Removing files from dropbox but keeping them on my desktop

Level 3

I have lots of stuff in my Dropbox account that i dont want to hold there any more. I want to transfer them to my Desktop.

However, when I move them to the Desktop and try to delete them from Dropbox they are deleted on both dropbox and my desktop.

Any ideas how to solve this.

Thanks

You have the Dropbox client installed and it's syncing your files? If so, move the files or folders from the Dropbox folder on your computer to another location on your computer. They will be removed from your Dropbox account.

Then you're not moving them; you're copying them. If a file is moved out of the Dropbox folder on your computer, it will be deleted from your Dropbox account online. It can't exist in two locations if you're moving it.

Dropbox has no connection to files outside of the Dropbox folder. It cannot delete files on your desktop or elsewhere on your computer.

Could you have created a link or shortcut on your Desktop to the file in your Dropbox, rather than copying or moving it?

Hi there

Sorry to be such a Luddite about this. But when you mention that I might have created a connection... how could I have done it ... and if I did, how do i break it??

If I move a file from Drop Box to (let's say) the Desktop of my Mac, the file name remains in Drop box as well as showing on the Desktop.  If then I delete it from DropBox, it removes the file from DroBox, the Desktop and my Macbook?

Thanks
