Selective Sync Changed?

Explorer | Level 4

I've been using Dropbox to sync web development projects for years. I use selective sync to keep dropbox from syncing node_modules since it's over 100k files. I created the folder node_modules, set it to ignore the folder with selective sync and added it back to Dropbox after it was removed.

Last Thursday Dropbox uploaded ALL of the files. I deleted the folders again, and tried to get it back to how it was, but every time I add the folder node_modules back, it just changes the name to "node_modules (Selective Sync Conflict)" and uploads everything again. I want it to just ignore the folder.

What happened? How can I get it back to how it was? Did your latest update change the way selective sync works? I'm using Windows 10.

Edit: This post has the exact same issue, but they carried the conversation into emails so not sure what happened.

Hi @avingochea,

As far as I know, when there are some files and/or folders with same name (case insensitive) - name conflict is guaranteed. This is not for last version only! If you want to ignore server version of particular folder (as you have described), just remove the server version, using web interface, before change anything in "Selective Sync". winking face

Hope this helps.

Hey @avingochea, thanks or reaching out to the Dropbox Community for assistance referencing the previous conversation on the topic!

As I had worked with the OP there, let me quickly update that the issue was resolved upon re-updating to the latest client Build, where this started working as expected again.

If I may quickly follow-up from your description, I’d like to see if you’ve noticed that across devices or it’s a single device creating the conflicts.

Please let us know whenever you have a minute!

Hey @Jane,

I'll have to get back to you tonight on whether it's only one computer causing the issues. I did, however, reinstall Dropbox on this computer this morning and the issues persisted. I downloaded the file from dropbox.com/downloading . Is there another place I should get the file from? Also, did he have to fresh install Dropbox?

It was an update, however from our discussion I could see that he was adjusting his settings, so it looks like this did the trick for him.

If I were in your shoes, I’d give the Offline installer a go, which you can find here→ (Stable Build 83.4.152).

Please keep me posted on the results!

I have the same problem with version 83.4.152 for linux, I can no longer ignore the folder node_modules, if I recreate it after excluding it from synchronization it's automatically renamed (Selective Sync Conflict)

Hi @Shrike,

As far as I can see what you are trying to do, "Selective Sync" was never been dedicated for such a purpose. Yes, you have used it to mask some part of your project like temporary files and results (correct me if I'm wrong), but unfortunately seems Dropbox forbids such use, from on, so you can't use it anymore as a filter.

I fully agree that such feature is need and many other thread discussions focus on same similar problems. Full featured filter functionality will mask not only directories, but also only particular files in directory in sync. Many Dropbox competitors provide such functionality, but Dropbox still ignore filters addition. slightly frowning face

Let's hope this will change someday.

Hey @Jane,

Reinstalling Dropbox didn't make a difference. Also, I tried it on a different machine and it's doing the same thing. Was there an update rolled out last week that caused the change in functionality? Any way to roll back to the previous version and disable updates?

Hi @avingochea,

I'm no so sure, are you try mask particular folder (like @Shrike does)? If so, you can try roll back to previous version as follows:

  • Download earlier version of your choice. ( mandatory offline installer! )
  • After download finishes turn your network temporarily off.
  • Install Dropbox using just downloaded installer.
  • Navigate in File Explorer to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Dropbox"
  • Right click on empty place, select "Properties".
  • Select "Security" tab and click "Edit..." button there.
  • Select "System" in "Group or user names" and select the checkbox next to "Write" permission in "Deny" column.
  • Confirm in possible popup warnings.
  • Click "Ok", again "Ok" and finally turn your network on.

Hope now Dropbox daemon could not autoupdate (its freezed). winking face

Please keep me posted on the results!

PS: On Linux the same could be achieved using following command (after install the chosen version and before launch it):

chmod a-w -R ~/.dropbox-dist
