Sharing some but not all documents between desktop and laptop

New member | Level 2

Apologies for the dumbass question.  I use Dropbox on my desktop and sync all those documents onto my phone.  I would like to share with my laptop some but not all the documents in my Dropbox folder.  What is the best way to do that? Thanks

Hey @JustineK, welcome to the Dropbox Community - not to worry, we are here to help!

Depending on what you want to accomplish, you can share folders or files with others, or send them shared links to content.

There are a few differences between each one. For example, if you send users a:

  • Shared folder, members can edit, but they'll need to have a Dropbox account to add the folder into. The folder will also take up space on their account.
  • Shared link to the folder, users won't need to have an account, but they won't be able to edit.

You can find more info about shared folders and files here, and shared links here

If you have any other questions, just give me a shout. Cheers!

Thanks.  I'm aware of that content, but it's focused on sharing links with someone else rather than sharing with yourself on another computer.  As I would want to edit the documents on both computers, the first option above (shared folders) is more appropriate than the second (shared link to the folder).  But what do I need to have on my laptop if I'm sharing some but not all of the folders in the Dropbox folder on my desktop?  If I download Dropbox on my laptop and log into my existing Dropbox account on my laptop, will ALL the documents in the Dropbox folder on my desktop appear on my laptop (which is not what I want)?  Or do I need to install Dropbox on my laptop and create a different Dropbox account to log into while on my laptop?  But then would I have two Dropbox folders back on my desktop if I now have two Dropbox accounts?  Or is there a better way to do this?

Hi @JustineK

Why not use Selective Sync to only put the files and folders on the laptop you want? Then you can edit them as you want as the ones you do want on will sync as you expect them to

That way you only have one account etc.
