Storing macOS home directory in Dropbox

New member | Level 2

Are there any known problems—data corruption, security issues—with storing my home folder in Dropbox and symlinking it into the macOS Users folder? This would make it a lot easier for me to work across multiple computers, and especially (which is why I'm asking) switch to a new one. I already have most of my stuff in Dropbox, but I'd still have to migrate things like app settings.

Ideal situation would be if all I had to do on the new machine was hook up Dropbox and link the Drophox-hosted user folder to the main Users folder. This is technically possible, as far as I can tell: any reason to not do this?

Hey @csilverman, thanks for reaching out to us for advice!

We’ve recently discussed some issues that have arised upon creating Symbolic links in the Dropbox folder while working on a MacOS Catalina on this thread. Rephrasing from that conversation, it would be worth noting that Symlinks are known to be causing high CPU usage thus causing your computer to run slowly.

That being said, I’ll just leave this question open to our Community of users; maybe someone could offer their insight on how you’d best go about on this request.

Thanks again for taking the time to drop us a line on the Community & please let me know if you have any follow-up questions &/or thoughts about any of the above!

Thanks, Jane! This is good to know. I realize I should have clarified a few things, in case it helps:

 - I'm not on Catalina, and probably won't be for a little while. I'm on High Sierra, and might be upgrading to Mojave.

 - I've already symlinked specific folders in Dropbox to my Documents folder, and it's been that way for a little while now—I haven't noticed any performance/sync issues so far.

Thanks for clarifying @csilverman!

Rephrasing from the resource I linked above, if you create a symlink that links to an item in your Dropbox account, we’ll sync the the symlink file at its location and the item that it links to at its location respectively. If that’s currently an essential part of your configuration/workflow that hasn’t caused any issues in the past, then you can continue utilizing that as before.

Even so, I wouldn’t suggest placing Settings files inside the Dropbox folder, as there may be an issue with apps attempting to access them. That’s merely my recommendation, as it’s my understanding that you’ve initially created this post seeking advice.

Thanks again for keeping in touch & feel free to let us know of your decision!
