Sync to dropbox, without changing file paths.

New member | Level 2

Good afternoon,

I have a lot of files from programs like for example Virtualbox and MPLab. When I tried putting them in the dropbox folder (I want to have them constantly synced for backup purposes), things went wrong because file paths changed to /Dropbox/

My question is, is there a way to sync files to dropbox, without having this problem. Or is there a way to make a sort of 'relative' path that skips the dropbox part?

I just subscribed to dropbox plus, but without this it would be useless for me to continue using it.

Thanks in advance!

Hello @jensvoorpyl, thanks for checking in with us.

Since the Dropbox folder is like any other folder on your computer, moving content into it adds it to its path.

If these third party apps work like live databases, we don't recommend syncing them with Dropbox as they have remote access methods themselves.

However, could you please clarify a bit more on what you're trying to achieve and the steps that you've tried already? Do you want to add files associated with the third party apps into your Dropbox folder or sync the third party apps themselves?

Keep me posted!

In short, no.

Dropbox can only sync files that exist within the Dropbox folder. It can't sync files that exist in other locations on your computer.

You could try moving the files/folders into Dropbox and then creating a symlink in the original location pointing back to the new location in Dropbox.
