The Dropbox desktop application won't start because of a Permissions error.

Helpful | Level 6

This is a new problem for me. I have used Dropbox for many years but now, when I tried to start the Dropbox application on my computer I got a message (in swedish) as follows:

"You can´t start Dropbox"

"It´s probably a permission error."

Then there is a link to a message starting:

bn.BUILD_KEY: Dropbox
bn.VERSION: 70.4.93
bn.DROPBOXEXT_VERSION: failed
bn.is_frozen: True

I don´t understand it. What shall I do with this incomprehensible text?

If I use my mobile or Google Chrome I can use Dropbox but not the application on my Mac. (High Sierra 10.13.6 and Chrome v. 73.0.3683.103).

Please help me!

Hey @kjellr, sorry to hear that.

Could the error be translated to something along the lines of “the operation isn’t permitted” by any chance?

If so, it could be that your Home directory is "locked". Nonetheless, this should be fixable:
  • Right-click on your Home folder ( /Users/{your username} ) and choose "Get Info".
  • Uncheck the "Locked" checkbox.
If you would like to perform these actions through the command line, you can do so with the following steps:
  1. Open the Terminal (found in /Applications/Utilites)
  2. Copy and paste the following line into the Terminal and press RETURN (you'll be prompted for your computer user's password - not your Dropbox password - after entering the first command): sudo chflags -R nouchg ~
Please bear in mind that if you have intentionally locked any folders in your Home folder, this will unlock them. After doing this, you can re-lock any folders that need to be locked that are not in your Dropbox folder.

Another possible cause of this would be local network sharing or folder redirection preferences setup in your Dropbox. Similar case can also occur when your Dropbox folder or its system files are located in a mounted network drive or a remote location

For these reasons, please ensure that your setup doesn’t include any of the above scenarios. (in which case, you may need to reach out to IT if your computer is in a work environment to check this out).

Let me know if this helps at all and I’ll make sure to get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks!

After a new installation of the application (two times!) it works again! You can ignore my question above.

I have no idea of what has happened but I am satisfied with the result.
