Upload speed around 5 MBps only when I am using 100Mbps connection? Should it be around 10-12MBps?

Explorer | Level 3

Hi

I have been using a trial version of Dropbox Business and while uploading I am getting roughly around 4.7 MBps only. I am on 100 Mbps connection and it is very good in most of the speedtests (including dropbox speed test). Then I want to know why I am not getting speeds around 10-12 MBps? What am I doing wrong? Do I need a high end PC or processor to speed up the process cause I read that dropbox does lots of hashing, encrypting, zipping and the total upload speed is the mixure of all these processes. Or there is something I am missing? Moreover I am using the browser to upload the files. Kindly help cause I have seen people posting screenshots where they are getting around 10-15 MBps upload speed.

Thanks.

Hello @droptool - welcome to the Dropbox Community!

At first, I'll have to ask, why use a web browser to upload your files and not the desktop application instead?

Our desktop app looks just like any other folder on your computer. The difference is that files added there will automatically sync and upload to the Dropbox website. It’s also faster, and allows you to upload larger files.

Keep in mind that uploading files to dropbox.com is limited by three things, including:

  • The size of the file(s).

  • The number of file(s).

  • The bandwidth and stability of your internet connection.

When it comes to the hashing, encrypting and compressing process you mentioned, these happen during the syncing process when you're running our desktop application and working within your Dropbox Folder. The uploads you initiate on a browser on the other hand will be mainly processed by the browser itself.

I hope this clears things up a tad and please let me know how it goes should you give my suggestion a go!

How would I know the progress of file upload in the dropbox folder? Cause I can see the progress in browser  but how to see progress of the uploading file in the dropbox folder? I also dont wanna syn , I just want to upload the file and later delete those files from the folder when the process is done.

Moreover I wanna ask if the same process (hashing, zipping etc) is not initiated on browser then why I am still getting slow speed like 4.7 to 5 MBps approx? Almost all the files are aound 1.2GB to 2.5GB (no smaller files) and as you have suggested three factors

  • The size of the file(s).

  • The number of file(s).

  • The bandwidth and stability of your internet connection

kindly also suggest if any multicore cpu or ram improvement may improve the uploading speed?

Apologies for the late reply @droptool; are you still having issues with this?
