What actually happens when you open a file that is in "smart sync"?

Collaborator | Level 9

Is the file temporarily saved to your hard drive? If so, where?

Dropboxer
Hey there @Trinity C.1,

When you open a smart synced “online only” file on your desktop, the file will be synced locally so that it can be opened. Essentially the app will automatically download the file and you will see this file in your Dropbox folder now with a green tick sync icon instead of the grey cloud.

This means that the file data will be within the Dropbox folder when it is made local. After you have finished using the file you will need to apply smart sync again by right clicking it (or any of its parent folders) and applying “Smart sync - online only”.

Hope this clarifies the matter for you - Thanks!
