What to do when someone shares a file with you that is harmful?

New member | Level 2

Some people I know recently on Dropbox have had their accounts hacked. When the hacker takes over a Dropbox account, they share files with me that contain a form designed to trick me into providing my credentials to other services, say Office365 for instance. What should I do in that situation? Can I just ignore the shared files? Is there a way for me to disable notifications when someone shares a file with me?

Hey there @dboxuser,
If a file has been shared with you that you believe to be for malicious purposes, then you can simply ignore the share notification. Currently there isn’t a way to disable notifications for when a file or folder is shared with you, however you can simply mark them as read to dismiss them.
Should you have already “accepted” a shared file and you see it within your account, I would suggest that you can remove your access to it to delete it from your account.
Let me know if you have any other questions about this - Thanks!
