When I move a file, it reappears in the original location in my Dropbox. Why?

New member | Level 2

So I work with field guys that send in pdf files to the office through drop box, then I (on the office side) do what I need to with those files and then stash them into a Processed folder. So the layout for folder progression is a main Year folder>Month>individual days>Processed. On a repeated bassis now, after I have completed my task and move the pdf file into processed by dragging and holding shift to explicitly move that file(not copy) it will move into the folder, say that I have deleted the file as a windows 10 little pop up, and then a few seconds later that file will pop back up in the day folder where my unproccesed work is. YET there is still a copoy of that file in the Proccessed folder so that if I move the same file into processed again it asks if I want to over write. This becomes extremely annoying and very ineffcient when I come into work the next day and am under the impression that I still have leftover work from the days before when in fact it is already done. Please help.

Hey @needhelp123, I'd be more than happy to help look into this!

In general, a move is considered to be a deletion from one location and an addition to another one, which would explain why you see a notification about a removal.

As for the re-appearing file though, could you please provide me a bit more info, such as:

  • Are you moving the files from one folder to another using your File Explorer/Finder or the desktop app?
  • Does this happen if you drag and drop without holding down the Shift button?
  • Do your events page show any relevant info regarding this?

Let me know what you find!

Moving files through desktop app, yes it still happens without holding shift and I am unsure what the events page is.

Thanks for getting back to me, @needhelp123, and apologies for not linking the events page above - I just added it.

The events page shows you changes that occurred in your Dropbox account, such as additions of new files.

Could you also let me know if the same behavior happens when you move (with or without holding Shift down) from your Finder/File Explorer?

Keep me posted!
