Who wins on a delete?

Level 5

Some of my files on dropbox have been corrupted by ransomware that hit my Windows machine. Some of them synced to my Mac. Those have since been deleted and replaced with backups.

Now, the question is, how to get them back properly on Dropbox server for syncing.

IF I delte the file using the Web interface on the server, and then start syncing running again on my Mac, will the file delete from my Mac, or will the missing file be replaced by my local copy and once again show up in the cloud as well?

I want to be sure I know who wins, so I do not loose files.

Thanks in advance.

Hey MajorHavoc,

If the files that you need to delete from your online Dropbox have a different extension on them (ex: instead of .docx they read .docx.crypto, or something to that effect), then your local files will not be deleted, as they will be considered different files, and they will upload safely.

If you’re not sure, the best thing to do here would be to remove these files from your local Dropbox folder on your computer, then delete the infected ones from your online account, relink your computer (sign in), let it sync, and then place the clean files back in to your local folder for syncing to the cloud.

If things don’t work out, you can always contact our support team here https://t.co/JzCu5Ol0GV so an agent can set up a restoration that would be performed by our specialists.

Cheers

Thanks Sacnchez.  That is exactly what I did because I was paranoid I might loose a file.

But still curious of the actual question I asked:

If I use the web, login to my Dropbox account, and delete a file from a synced folder on Dropbox on the web, and the file is still currently on my computer, which of these happens:

1). The local file is deleted to make it match the server.

Or

2). The local file is uploaded to the server to make the server match the computer

i guess I will have to try this to find out.

Cheers

The first thing to remember is that Dropbox does not use a master/slave relationship for syncing. There is no single device that takes priority. Syncing is based on the timing of the actions. Is the action newer on the computer or online? Which ever is considered the newest event will win.

If you delete a file on the Dropbox website, that file will be deleted on any linked computers. If a file is deleted online and, before the deletion is synced, that file is updated on your computer, then the updated copy will be synced back to Dropbox online.

You can easily test this. Put a file in your Dropbox folder and allow it to sync. Pause syncing. Delete the file using the Dropbox website, then update (edit/save) the file in your local Dropbox. Resume syncing. Dropbox will index the file, see that the local copy is the newest, and sync it back to your account online.
