disable the temporary downloads files from getting syncing

New member | Level 2

I think there should be a feature regarding turning off sync for temporary download files (ex. .CRDOWNLOAD files).

Reasons:

  1. while dropbox is trying to upload a temporary incomplete file, the download of the file itself gets painfully slow.
  2. syncing temporary download files is without a doubt a futile exercise. since it is useless across the device, and after few seconds anyways the download will be complete, and then you have to sync complete file anyways.
  3. avoiding this sync will save bandwidth of both dropbox server and the customer

there are many such benefits that you can enumerate. But i think you get the idea.

Hey there @sumansourabh26 - welcome to our Community!

I guess you're referring to the desktop app and pausing the sync doesn't help with what you had in mind - right?

In that case, thanks for providing your feedback, but I'll need a bit more information so I can forward your complete suggestion to the dev team.

If you have some spare time, could you eaborate on your use-case and how would you benefit from this? How are those files generated in the first place?

Feel free to provide any additional information on this one and I'll be more than happy to pass your ideas to our dev team for review.

Thanks!

answering your question one by one

  1. yes i am talking about desktop app.
  2. How are those files generated - I am talking of the situation when you are downloading a file from your browser (let us say chrome) directly into dropbox folder. In that case, a temporary incomplete file (with extension .CRDOWNLOAD) is created by the browser.
  3. according to current implementation the dropbox starts to sync even the incomplete file, that is still being downloaded. This reduces the download speed of computer. Also this is pretty useless since anyways, after download the incomplete file get deleted automatically and a complete file replaces that. So it is the waste of bandwidth both for user and dropbox.
  4. My solution - the sync of these temporary files can disables, by dropbox itself (based on extention)
  5. benefits - will save bandwidth of both user and dropbox. Also it will boost download speed brom browser to dropbox folder.

cheers!!!
