Basics for sharing folders

Here in Get Started, no question is too simple. So, let's talk about the basics of sharing folders in Dropbox!

How to use Dropbox shared folders

You can share a folder in Dropbox to give people view or edit access to that folder's contents. When you invite people to a folder in your Dropbox, it becomes a shared folder. Shared folders are added to the Dropbox accounts of each member and changes to the contents of a shared folder sync to everyone who can access it.

You can invite people as viewers or editors to shared folders. People with edit access to shared folders can:
  1. View files
  2. Comment on files
  3. Edit files

Re: Basics for sharing folders

As for a follow-up question, is it also possible to share file(s) with another person by sending them a simple link to access the work ... one that may or may not allow them to edit the file(s)?  If so, would you kindly explain/describe the correct process for accomplishing this?  Thank you.

Re: Basics for sharing folders

Hi @FrankSpitzig! Certainly. I recommend that you visit this help article on folder and file permissions.

The basic steps will be as follows.

Set permissions on dropbox.com

If you’re the owner or an editor of a shared folder, you can change folder permissions. If you’re the owner of a shared file, you can add or remove people from that file.

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click Files.
  3. Navigate to the file or folder you’re interested in.
  4. Hover over the file or folder and click Share.
  5. Next to the name of a member, click the dropdown and select Can edit, Can view, or Remove.
    • If you’re changing permissions on a shared file, you’ll only have the option to Remove a member

I recommend that you visit the article linked above for more information. Please let us know if you have follow up questions and we'll be happy to help!

Thanks,

Alexis
