SSO dropbox account link to linux server fails

I installed dropbox 1.6.2 on an ubuntu 14.04.5 server edition OS.  When I execute the command dropbox start a web browser opens and prompts for sign-in. I assume it is trying to link a dropbox account to the fresh install. Once I enter my dropox email, it removes the password box because I have a single-sign-on account with the university I work for. Once clicking sign in, however, it says invalid email or sometimes invalid URL, and I cant get any further. How should I link the account?

Should I be using a newer version of dropbox? Could this be related to the firefox browser I am using ? Any help would be great, thanks!

Re: SSO dropbox account link to linux server fails

Welcome to our community, @dermen

Has this been working up until now, or is this a new sign-in procedure?

Linux not being my strong suit, by any stretch of the imagination, I would indeed try a different web browser and see if sign-in works. Also being up to date on all apps, browsers and extensions, and operating system updates is always a good idea.

Keep in mind that, generally, we don’t support server operating systems, so I’m not sure that our team would be able to troubleshoot.

Cheers

It never worked, I will try on the chrome browser and report back. Thanks!

Re: SSO dropbox account link to linux server fails

in my case, I had to use chromium browser (aka Google chrome). After installing it, I had to force the dropbox initialization script to use chrome, and to do so I changed the default browser via the command line https://askubuntu.com/a/16626/145382 . Further, I was connecting to my server remotely, and I wanted to run the dropbox daemon in the background after I logged out. To do this was a little glitchy, I had to connect to the server WITHOUT graphics streaming (e.g. without using the -Y or -X options to ssh), then I was able to use nohup to start the daemon in the background (nohup ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd &). The original install instructions provided here: https://www.dropbox.com/install-linux
