Re: Can we prevent the new desktop app from opening in the dock and just have the icon in the menu b

New member | Level 2

I understand that products have to be evolved and I don't blame anybody for trying.

For me, however, the main strength and why I loved Dropbox so much is that it was basically invisible, in the background, supporting my workflow by just working simply and not bothering me at all.

Now I am very confused.

Please give us the option to get our "old ways" back.

Try this, it should get rid of the DropBox app interface upon boot:

1. Open the 'Script Editor' to create an Applescript

2. Paste this in:

repeat
	tell application "System Events"
		try
set AppName to name of every process whose background only is false
		end try
if "Dropbox" is in AppName then
			try
				tell application "Dropbox" to quit
			end try
			exit repeat

		end if
	end tell
	delay 2
end repeat

3. Save it as an Applescript Application (no startup screen, no stay open)

4. Go to Users is System Prefs, and add this application to the login items fro your user.

5. Launch the application once to give it the permissions it needs (A dialog box may come up asking you to grant it permissions).

6. Reboot.

This is literally the dumbest and most anti-customer focused response I've ever read.

For YEARS .... TO DATE ... Dropbox has operated as a menubar only tool.

To simply say "all active programs will appear on the Dock while they are open, kindly note that it will not be possible to remove it from there without removing the app altogether." is rediculous and a terrible direction for Dropbox.

It's also untrue - Not all active programs appear on the Dock; just like Dropbox used to be,  not all applications function this way.

Not possible to remove ... that is just ... a perplexing response.

Forcing customers to unwanted "features" and then telling them (condescendingly) that "that's how all apps work" is not only bad for business but insulting.

Hey @hmedia & @JuanWayri, sorry to hear about any frustration caused; perhaps I should rephrase my previous reply where I had mentioned that this feedback has reached the relevant team, as I understand that reverting back to the previous behavior is important to you.

I too find this new behaviour annoying. Why can't the Dropbox utility load as it always has without the new app needing to load as well?

Can i opt out from the program? I agree with everybody above, the app opening at login at startup is invasive and completely useless to me. How can i revert the previous dropbox state?

Thanks
