Re: How do I remove the new desktop app?

Helpful | Level 6

I’m having the same problem and wrote about it in another thread.

Support above says you cannot sync without having the Dropbox app running in the Dock.  Not true.  Once the Dropbox app opens in my Dock, I also get the Dropbox sync icon in my menubar.  When I then quit the Dropbox app in the Dock, it closes / goes away but the menubar icon stays and syncs in the background as usual.

Closing the desktop app doesn’t stop Dropbox running.

We just want a way to fire up syncing at login without the Dropbox desktop app opening itself in the Dock.  This was possible in the old version of Dropbox.  It should still be possible now.

You're exactly right, pollycat. I also discovered that I could quit the app after startup and still have the menu item and syncing service working as they always have.

It's just irritating to have to quit the app every single time I start my Mac.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball wrote about this in blunter language than you and I have used.

https://daringfireball.net/linked/2019/06/13/dropbox-sucks

The last few lines of his short piece says it nicely.

"There’s simply no clarity to this new Dropbox. I don’t even understand much of what Dropbox is saying it can do. I think they’re trying to be Slack or something? I already have Slack. All I want is a folder that syncs, with sharing."

Re: Can we prevent the new desktop app from opening in the dock and just have the icon in the menu b

The John Gruber piece speaks for me.

I valued Dropbox because it synced reliably in the background and got out the way.

Now it is becoming intrusive and annoying with the latest update.

Agree.

When something that’s always worked quietly in the background begins to demand my attention, the attention I give it is, “Why are you bothering me?”

I don’t want my refrigerator asking if it can order more milk for me, either.

Maybe Dropbox is attempting to capture more mindshare? I don’t know.

Bah. I’m just trying to get my work done, and here I am, crabbing to a company that seems to have decided to be less helpful than they used to be.

Here's how Droplr deals with this scenario:

Is up to the user to choose if he/she want to use your in-app file manager or just keep it simple and have the menubar app to seamless sync your files. slightly smiling face

The "Hide Dock" option is NOT available in the latest version (76.3.107).

So, until they fix this, which they better, your dock is going to be cluttered with something you don't want or need to see and has no purpose except to intrude.

QA, QA, QA!

I concur - it never use to behave like this until the new update. Please change it back, sick of seeing the icon and taking space up on my already limited 13 inch mac dock

I've been having the same issue for the last week or so. I do not want Dropbox visible in the dock.
