I don't notice it on Win8.1, but I have already hacked out a bunch of stuff in the registry on Win8.1. I have the Dropbox folder conveniently located in the root of a second hard drive, I don't need the link cluttering up the Navigation Pane, or the Desktop for that matter.
Brandon B - It might also be Windows 10. I also remove the Default folders from Windows 10 with a registry hack. Everytime an update pushes to Windows 10, the folders come back. It is getting quite aggravating. It is possible that certain registry settings get restored on update, kind of the same way Windows has protected drivers. Just a guess, but that is what I am seeing.
Here is another thing I am trying. In regedit, go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace{E31EA727-12ED-4702-820C-4B6445F28E1A}
and rename it to this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace{E31EA727-12ED-4702-820C-4B6445F28E1A-XXX}
Then restart explorer. This has removed the Dropbox link in the navigation pane, for now.
It doesn't work.
what I've tried (and has continued to work through reboots and windows 10 updates) is changing the advanced permissions so that nothing has access to WRITE to the key anymore.
I've been fighting with this one as well, and for me the fix was to take ownership of the following entries (the "[SID]" portion will likely vary per installation; just search "HKEY_USERS" for "E31EA727"):
Once you have ownership of these entries (and similar to the above, I'd recommend setting ownership such that only you have write access), set:
System.IsPinnedToNamespaceTree = 0
Note: you won't be able to see this parameter until you've successfully taken ownership of the entry.
Nathan yours did work, but on reboot dropbox restarted and it put itself back in the pane
Hi, Richard - did you also make the changes outlined by Gunnar above? It's possible that it's a combination of his changes and mine that did the trick for me (as I did perform both).
I've rebooted several times (and by now, Dropbox has most likely auto-updated itself as well) and my pane is still Dropbox-free.
For me it always opens expanded as well taking over the whole sidebar.
There is a much more elegant way.
Navigate to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{E31EA727-12ED-4702-820C-4B6445F28E1A}
Then change the value of this DWORD from 1 to 0
System.IsPinnedToNamespaceTree
Hi Nathan,
You were right, doing a combination of Gunmars and your solution finally for rid of Dropbox from the Nav Pane.
Cheers guys!
----------------EDIT---------------------
Never mind, it's back again.
